Michael Jeffrey Jordan was born February 17, 1963, in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina, attending Emsley A. Laney High School. His father, James R. Jordan Sr., was a mechanic and his mother, Deloris Jean Rutledge, worked as a bank teller before becoming a middle school principal.
Despite growing up in a reasonably middle-class household, Michael was an athlete early, excelling in many sports. His father, James, worked as a machinery supervisor at a General Motors plant. The young Jordan was ambitious and often skipped school to play basketball—sometimes by making his ball out of duct tape and trash bags. At 15 years old, he played his first organized game with boys three years older than him. He scored 12 points and stole the ball twice, leading his team to victory.
A six-time NBA champion, three-time MVP and 10-time All-Star, Jordan averaged 30.1 points per game for his career. His legacy with the Chicago Bulls is unrivaled, as he led them to six titles from 1991 to 1998.
